William Groom Huke - 'Officer's Funeral - On Monday afternoon the remains of William Groom Huke, Esquire, veterinary surgeon, Royal Horse Artillery, were buried at Stoke [Damerel Parish] Church.  The procession was formed at the Granby Barracks, and the route of the cortége along the Stoke-road to the church was so densely thronged with spectators, that at some places difficulty was experienced in passing.  The deceased was highly respected, and his death has caused much regret amongst the corps.  The melancholy procession proceeded in the following order:- The firing party composed of artillerymen, the band of the Royal Marines  playing the Dead March in Saul, the corpse drawn on a gun carriage, the coffin being covered by the Union Jack, on which were placed the cap, sword, and belt of the deceased, the pall being borne by four officers, who were followed by the chief mourners, the privates, non-commissioned officers, and officers of the deceased's corps.'  [The Plymouth and Devonport Weekly Journal, Thursday February 26th 1857].
