HILL, WESTLAKE AND COMPANY LIMITED'S SIDING

There were two private sidings at Chilsworthy Halt, the one immediately opposite the Halt itself giving access to the Messrs Hill, Westlake and Company Limited's Brick and Tile Works.

Following the takeover of the Greenhill Works by Messrs Hill, Westlake and Company Limited, at some date between 1907 and 1919 they erected a new Brick and Tile Works at Chilsworthy on the opposite side of Greenhill Works' clay pit.  Although it has been claimed that this Works never became operational because the Scrivener beehive kiln was not connected to a flue, it is certain that a private railway siding was laid in: it is recorded in the Railway Clearing House "Hand Book of Railway Stations, etc." for 1929.  It was still listed in the 1956 edition.

It is not clear as to whether or not this Works had anything to do with the Thomas Westlake, brick maker and coal merchant, who operated in the Parish of Calstock in 1883.
