NUMBER 24 STORE, THE WHITE YARN STORE (S135)
Number 24 Store, the White Yarn Store, South
Yard. Ropes were essential to the warships in the days of sail and Devonport Dockyard had two Rope Houses and several associated buildings. Constructed of limestone rubble circa 1766, this building housed the White Yarn that came from the Spinning House before it was passed to the Tarring House. It has two storeys and has a king post slate roof. The eastern side contains a central doorway. To the south of the Store is Number 25 Store where the Tarring was carried out, and Number 26 Store, the Tarred Yarn Store. There is a second Tarred Yarn Store, Number 27 Store, on the end. The East Ropery and West Ropery are to the west of these stores. Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and succeeding legislation Number 24 Store, the White Yarn Store, has Listed Building Grade 2* status.
