SAINT BUDEAUX FERRY ROAD SIGNAL BOX

There was a temporary signal box at Saint Budeaux from Sunday February 23rd 1902 until Monday August 3rd 1903 while the Weston Mill Viaduct was replaced by a double-track one.  The new double-track main line was opened on Wednesday August 5th 1903 between Keyham Station Signal Box and the Royal Albert Bridge Signal Box.  When the new GWR Saltash Suburban Service was introduced on Wednesday June 1st 1904, Saint Budeaux Platform was opened.

In order to improve the traffic flow a Down Avoiding Line was brought into operation just before the Royal Albert Bridge.  This required a signal box between Saint Budeaux Platform and the Royal Albert Bridge Signal Box and Saint Budeaux Signal Box was opened on Sunday June 28th 1908.

A new freight only branch line was opened to the Bull Point Ordnance Depot on Friday June 2nd 1916 and this required a signal box at the junction with the main line, just to the west of Weston Mill Viaduct.  It was named Saint Budeaux East Signal Box and the original Saint Budeaux Signal Box was renamed Saint Budeaux West Signal Box.

The Box measured 21 feet by 11 feet by 8 feet and originally contained a lever frame of 17 levers.  It had originally been intended to be placed at Pontsarn Crossing on the main line at Peterston-super-Ely, Glamorganshire, just to the west of Cardiff.  Until the start of the Second World War it was not a block post and was only staffed when access was required to the Bull Point Branch.  Following the installation of a link between the Great Western Railway and Southern Railway, opened on March 2nd 1941, a new lever frame containing 36 levers was brought in to use.  To save the expense of building a new signal box, the internal staircase was replaced by a porch and steps outside the western end of the Box, as shown in the photograph above.

Following the closure of the 1941 Saint Budeaux West Signal Box, the Saint Budeaux East Signal Box was renamed Saint Budeaux Ferry Road Signal Box on and as from Sunday June 22nd 1952.  It then became a block post and was regularly manned between between 9am and 5pm.

As soon as the "Is Line Clear?" request was received for both Down or Up trains the signalman had to request "Is Line Clear?" from the next signal box.  For Up trains this was repeated all the way in to Plymouth but for Down trains it went only as far as Royal Albert Bridge Signal Box.  When the "Train entering Section" bell code was received for a Down train, the "Train Approaching" code had to be sent to the Royal Albert Bridge Signal Box.

On January 30th 1964 the facing crossover in the link between the two main lines was removed.  Soon afterwards, on September 7th 1964 the former Southern  Region main line between Saint Budeaux Victoria Road Signal Box and Devonport King's Road Station was closed.  All Down Southern Region trains from Lydford Station was now diverted via the Western main line to get into Plymouth.  Saint Budeaux Victoria Road Signal Box was closed on and as from July 25th 1965 and its signals were then worked from the Ferry Road Signal Box.

Between September 15th and December 15th 1968 the Down line between Keyham Station and Saint Budeaux Ferry Road Station was taken out of use while work on Weston Mill Viaduct was undertaken.  The Up line was used for both directions, using interlocking levers in connection with the block instruments.  As a result of the singling of the former Southern Region main line to Bere Alston on and as from Monday September 7th 1970, a new Down facing crossover was brought into use at Ferry Road Signal Box.  Shortly after this was started the Up line across Weston Mill Viaduct was taken out of use and temporary single line working instituted.

Saint Budeaux Ferry Road Signal Box was close don and as from Monday July 2nd 1973.
